The Laboratory of Mathematical Geophysics was created as part of the Institute in 1961. The first head, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Georgy Mitrofanovich Voskoboinikov, headed the laboratory until 1981. From 1981 to 1990, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Alexander Veniaminovich Tsirulsky headed the laboratory; from 1990 to 1992, PhD in Physics and Mathematics Faina Iosifovna Nikonova served as the head of the laboratory; since 1992, the laboratory has been headed by Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Petr Sergeevich Martyshko.
